Travis County Parks Collaborate on Initiative to Preserve Dark Skies

The Hill Country Alliance (HCA) has launched the Night Sky Preservation Fund, aimed at protecting the natural beauty of Central Texas’ night skies and combating light pollution. On January 14, the HCA announced the first recipients of this fund, which supports various initiatives across seven counties focused on improving outdoor lighting and educating communities about the importance of preserving night sky quality. The fund was established with support from the Coypu Foundation and is designed for nonprofits, local governments, and small businesses involved in night sky conservation efforts. Selected projects include educational programs, sky quality monitoring, and upgrades to lighting in public spaces. HCA Executive Director Katherine Romans emphasized the need for proactive measures to maintain the region’s stargazing opportunities as urban development increases.
