Researchers from the University of Houston (UH) are collaborating with the Harris County Sustainability office and the Energy Management Team to establish a comprehensive baseline for energy use across the county’s facilities. This partnership, involving UH Associate Professor Jian Shi and Moores Professor Zhu Han, aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce costs while promoting renewable energy sources. Over the past year, the team has analyzed energy data from numerous county buildings, identifying key opportunities for savings—resulting in over $230,000 in annual electricity cost reductions. Future initiatives include enhancing building automation systems and installing LED lighting, with goals to decrease electricity use by at least 5% annually by 2030 and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% over the next five years. This project exemplifies UH’s commitment to addressing real-world challenges through impactful research that benefits local communities and the environment.
