A research scientist at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), Dr. Li Ma, has received a $540,000 grant to explore the potential of LED lighting in enhancing greenhouse strawberry production. This initiative addresses the challenges posed by climate change and aims to improve crop yields by optimizing light spectrum and intensity tailored to specific strawberry varieties. Funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Mitacs, the three-year project collaborates with industry partners like Sollum Technologies and Star Produce to promote sustainable strawberry farming practices that reduce carbon emissions and energy costs. The project also emphasizes training for students, who are actively engaged in hands-on research. Ma underscores the project’s goal of making local strawberry production more efficient and sustainable, paving the way for year-round indoor farming in Canada.
