Tejas Anto Kannampuzha, a student at the University of Hyderabad, has developed a solution to combat acid fly attacks in university hostels, a problem prevalent in tropical areas and known to cause painful skin conditions. Collaborating with Prof. B.R. Shamanna from the School of Medical Sciences, Kannampuzha’s research, published in the Indian Journal of Entomology, examined the correlation between different lighting types and the frequency of fly incidents. The study involved 209 hostel residents during a dermatitis outbreak from April to July 2022, revealing that rooms illuminated with LED lights, which emit less ultraviolet-A (UV-A) radiation, experienced significantly fewer fly encounters—19.51%—compared to rooms with CFL lights, where 75.61% reported issues.
