A coalition of environmental and scientific organizations has called on the Maltese government to take urgent measures to protect the dark skies of Dwejra, Gozo, a crucial site for astronomy and local wildlife. Despite being designated as a Dark Sky Heritage Area, Dwejra has seen increasing light pollution from nearby developments, threatening both scientific research and the natural habitat of sensitive bird species. The open letter, addressed to key government ministers, emphasizes the need to enforce existing regulations that previously ensured darkness in the area. The signatories, including notable organizations like BirdLife Malta and the University of Malta’s Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy, argue that safeguarding Dwejra’s natural darkness is vital for educational, ecological, and cultural purposes, advocating for action that prioritizes conservation over commercial interests. They stress that protecting the site is not only essential for biodiversity but could also enhance sustainable tourism in Gozo.
