Use of Bright Lights May Reduce Shark Attack Incidents

Australian researchers have discovered that bright LED lights may help reduce shark attacks by distracting great whites from human silhouettes. In experiments off the South African coast, a team led by Macquarie University biologist Dr. Laura Ryan tested seal-shaped decoys to observe shark interactions. They found that decoys with bright horizontal stripes significantly decreased shark encounters, while strobe lights proved ineffective. Inspired by natural camouflage in marine species, the researchers aim to develop non-invasive devices to protect both humans and sharks. They are currently testing the lights on other dangerous shark species and working on a surfboard prototype, with hopes of enhancing safety for surfers without harming marine life. The findings of this study are published in the journal Current Biology.
