A group of fourteen disabled veterans recently participated in a unique excavation project organized by the American Veterans Archaeological Recovery (AVAR) at the site of the Battle of Camden in South Carolina, fought during the Revolutionary War in 1780. Over four weeks, the veterans, equipped with GPS technology, aimed to gather spatial data to enhance understanding of this historically significant yet often overlooked battle. Their efforts involved creating a heat map to reveal troop movements and engagement patterns, challenging prior narratives about the American militia’s performance. AVAR founder Stephen Humphreys emphasized the therapeutic benefits of such projects for veterans and highlighted their unique perspective and dedication, noting their exceptional work ethic and team spirit. Partner organizations like the American Battlefield Trust joined to support this initiative, which not only deepens historical insight but also promotes the mental and physical well-being of the veteran participants.
