Ruthin sports venues are at the forefront of combating nighttime light pollution through innovative sustainable lighting solutions. The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape team, in collaboration with local facilities such as Clwb Rygbi Rhuthun and Llanfwrog Community Centre, has implemented ecologically friendly lighting across sporting areas, marking the first fully dark sky compliant lights in Wales. These systems focus light into designated areas, resulting in a significant reduction in energy consumption—45% for the Rugby Club and 61% for the tennis Club—while also improving the playing experience. The warmer 2700 kelvin LED lights are less harmful to wildlife, addressing the growing concern over light pollution’s impact on biodiversity and human health. Supported by the Welsh Government and various local organizations, this initiative showcases a commitment to sustainable practices that benefit both communities and the environment, with hopes for wider adoption throughout Wales.
