Why Are Florida’s Streetlights Purple? Here’s the Explanation

Residents in Orlando, Florida, and across the U.S. have noticed streetlights turning a blueish-purple hue, a phenomenon attributed to a manufacturer defect in some American Electric Lighting fixtures. According to Duke Energy and Acuity Brands, the issue is caused by “spectral shift” from phosphor displacement in LED lighting, which can expose the blue light underneath and result in the unusual color. While these lights remain functional and pose no major threat to drivers, they may reduce visibility and hinder the ability to differentiate colors at night. Both Duke Energy and Florida Power & Light are actively working to identify and replace affected lights, with reports of the issue emerging from various states and even Canada and Ireland. Residents can report malfunctioning streetlights through designated online tools or via customer service hotlines.
