The Dark Matters, a free event celebrating the tenth anniversary of the North York Moors National Park’s Dark Sky Festival, will take place on March 4 at the university’s Creative Centre. This gathering will feature dark sky experts, academics, and artists who will engage in discussions about the importance of rethinking our use of artificial light due to its detrimental effects on wildlife, human health, and the environment. Chaired by Dr. Jen Hall from York St John University, the event will include a panel of specialists who will explore responsible lighting practices that enhance safety while mitigating light pollution. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view The Dark Matters film, showcasing research conducted by Dr. Hall and Dr. Brendan Paddison. The event aims to encourage collective efforts toward preserving dark skies for future generations, positioning York as a potential pioneering city in this initiative.
