York St John University is set to host “The Dark Matters” on March 4, an event aimed at addressing light pollution and promoting dark sky-friendly practices in the city. Part of the North York Moors National Park’s Dark Sky Festival, the free event will feature discussions with experts, academics, and artists on the impact of artificial light on wildlife and human health. The panel, chaired by Dr. Jen Hall, will explore ways to create better light management in urban environments while highlighting the benefits of using responsible lighting, such as enhancing safety and reducing energy wastage. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view a film showcasing relevant research. Dr. Hall emphasized York’s potential to become the UK’s first Dark Sky city, advocating for collaborative efforts to protect nocturnal environments for future generations. Bookings for the event are now open.
